Garage Sale Follow Up & Lessons Learned

Well I held my garage sale this weekend from 8am to 2pm and after advertising and beer expense I made a total of ...80 bucks. Certainly not a fortune but a lot better than nothing.

Other than getting rid of some extra junk I actually learned a few lessons from my first garage sale experience.

1. Your garbage is truly another man’s treasure.
2. Active selling works.
3. People will usually pay more than you think something’s worth (I ended up taking my price tags off half way through)
4. Tax free money sure is sweet.

I love tax free money. Can't argue with that!

$80 tax free and a day of beer drinking for free...I'd consider that a success.

Good stuff.

I'm going to have my second sale soon so I'll have to try some more "active selling".

#3 reminds me of the saying, "the first person to give a number loses in negotiations."

Nothing like clearing out your junk!

fourpillars,

The active selling worked surprisingly well. I'd set my mind to sell an item and I'd usually be able to unload it within with 1 - 3 customers.

After advertising expenses I made about $380. My advice, make big signs that attract people as they are driving, advertise in the community paper, get others involved on your street (split the advertising cost), active selling and don't put prices on the items. Finally, be ready by 7am because people start showing up by 7:15!
