Payback for Hybrid Cars

This is a follow up post to my May 29th post, “Hybrid Vehicle Rebates”.

I was recently reading an article at MoneyCentral entitled “The Costly Secrets of Hybrid Cars”. This article questions the cost effectiveness of buying a hybrid vehicle and provides the cost difference between the hybrid and gas versions of a few different vehicles. More detail is provided in the article however, a basic summary is that although hybrid vehicles do save you money on gas they are not yet cost effective in the long run due to the higher initial sticker price.

With the new rebate on fuel efficient cars, does this effect the calculations on the cost efficiency of hybrid vehicles?

Interesting article. I had to use the cached copy from google because I couldn't find it anywhere else.

Hi David,

That's an interesting article, but perhaps a little biased. There are Prius taxi cabs in Vancouver that have gone much further than 100,000 miles on their first set of batteries. To say that a GM car will last 3 times as long as a Toyota makes me more than a little skeptical of the data.

But I do agree that it is important to look at the environmental impact of batteries, including creation and disposal/recycling.

Its like just a vice versa thing. Having a hybrid car will lessen your expense on gasoline but purchasing a hybrid car cost a lot. So sum it all, the savings on the gasoline is just equal on the amount of a Hybrid car
